Proprietor/Chief Winemaker Marisco Vineyards, Marlborough
New Zealand
Brent Marris inherited a solid foundation for a life devoted to winemaking and viticulture. He grew up on one of the first contract vineyards in Marlborough established by his parents in 1978. Inspired and encouraged by his father, John Marris, he graduated from Roseworthy Agricultural College (South Australia) in 1983 with a Bachelor of Applied Science in Oenology (winemaking and viticulture) thus becoming Marlborough’s first locally born, and raised, qualified winemaker.
Brent has 32 years of grape growing, winemaking and marketing experience. This includes establishing the Oyster Bay wine style and creating Wither Hills.
He has huge experience as a senior wine judge throughout NZ, Australia, Europe and the US.
The last 13 years have been focused on Brent’s new company, Marisco Vineyards, developing the brands “The Ned”, ”The Kings Series” and more recently “Leefield Station”.
Brent and his wife, Rosemary, have built a “new generation” winery while planting a good portion of Leefield Station (2,200ha). Ultimately with over 1,000ha of vineyard, on some exciting Marlborough country, all brands can grow while the team at Marisco Vineyards continues to control its own destiny of making wine of the highest quality from its own sites.
Brent has been at the forefront of New Zealand’s wine industry development. His history of crafting wines for markets around the world is testament to his passion and commitment.
Brent and Rosemary’s eldest daughter, Emma, has completed her degree in winemaking and has joined the company. Along with her three younger sisters, this will ensure the legacy of Marisco Vineyards continues.
